‘흥얼거림에 대한 갈망, 회기본능’
EP [자멸위기종], 싱글 [집]에 이어 6개월 만에 EP [방학숙제]로 돌아온 회기본능은, 여러 장르의 음악을 활용하여 그들만의 세계관을 청자들에게 설명한다. 그중에서도 그들이 앨범별로 관통하는 주제 의식은 ‘존재론적 탐색’이다. 즉 우리가 존재하는 이유를 고민하고, 직면하는 문제를 해석한 뒤 실행을 통해 해결하려 한다. 하지만 여전히 해답을 찾는 일은 어렵기만 하다. 이에 대한 이야기를 담은 EP [방학숙제]는 반복되는 방향성의 소실 속에서 나름의 길을 찾아보려 한다.
‘숨 막히는 여름밤의 굴레, 방학숙제’
현재를 살아가는 사람들은 나이와 관계없이, 흘러가는 시간 속에 강제로 부여된 과업을 해결하기 위해 살아간다. 그 과업이 우리가 하고 싶은 일인지는 상관없다. 우리는 목적도, 이유도 찾지 못한 채 반복되는 문제를 해결해야 한다는 책임감을 주입받는다. 싫어도 마주해야만 하는 숙제들은 눈을 감아도 사라지지 않는다. 그리고 어김없이 한계를 짜내야 하는 상황 속에 우리는 자신을 스스로 던져넣으며 압박한다. 이러한 지속적인 스트레스는 과업으로부터의 환기를 갈망하게 한다. 그럼에도 우리는 비슷한 처지의 주변 이들을 마주하는 것만으로도, 방학숙제가 끝날 것처럼 느낄지도 모른다.
‘멈춰가는 회전무대, 돌아오는 검사 시간’
[방학숙제]는 방학이라는 한정된 시간 내에서 숙제에 쫓기는 한 아이의 이야기이다. 아이는 직면한 숙제를 해결해야 한다는 압박감 속에서 다양한 감정을 배운다. 매일 밤 악몽처럼 돌아오는 숙제에 아이는 끝내 마주할 검사 시간을 무기력하게 느끼고, 치약마냥 머리를 짜내야 하는 숙제의 거듭된 압박에 결국 무너지며 분노에 매몰된다. 또 어쩌다 마주친 뿌연 연기를 홀린 듯 마시다가 자신의 처지에 잠시 초연해지기도 한다. 이러한 감정의 혼란 속에서 아이는 숙제로부터 도망쳐 놀이터로 향한다. 그리고 혼자서는 돌릴 수 없는 회전무대에 약속이라도 한 듯 모여든 친구들과 만나며 일시적인 위안을 얻는다.
하지만 회전무대는 멈춰가고, 검사 시간은 돌아오며, 아이의 표정은 다시 알 수 없다. 이 아이는 어쩌면 이미 지나간 우리의 모습일 수도, 혹은 현재나 미래의 우리의 모습일 수도 있다.
[악몽]

어제 숙제를 다 못해서 오늘 더 많이 해야 했다.
너무 많아서 하기 힘들었다.
숙제가 남아서 잠이 안 왔다.
숙제를 다 못하면 무서운 꿈을 꾼다.
숙제가 악몽인가 보다.
[치약]
- 7월 2X일 O요일 -
양치도 숙제 같다.
숙제에 쓸 말처럼 치약도 떨어졌다.
엄마는 밑에서부터 짜올리라고 했다.
내 힘으로는 아무리 해도 안 됐다.
입에서 썩은 맛이 난다.
[연기]
- 8월 1X일 O요일 -
부모님의 잔소리를 피해 집에서 나왔다.
내일 아침에 숙제가 갑자기 끝나 있으면 좋겠다.
그런데 소독차가 지나갔다.
연기를 따라 달리다 보니 목이 따가웠다.
왠지 기분이 상쾌했다.
[겁쟁이]

집에 있기 싫어 놀이터로 갔다.
나만 그런 건 아닌지 애들이 많았다.
타고 싶었던 빙빙이를 다 같이 잔뜩 탔다.
우리는 해가 져서 각자 집으로 갔다.
다들 숙제가 남았나 보다.
그래도 오늘은 발걸음이 가벼웠다.
남은 숙제를 더 하다 자야겠다.

- Cancellation cannot be made after 12:00p.m. on the next day of the order date, though the shipment hasn’t begun.
