제한 속에서 자라난 음악 - 피아니스트 왕혜인

피아니스트는 꽤 자주, 주어진 여건 속에서 상상력을 발휘하기를 요구받는다. 우연히, 그러나 필연처럼 하양 무학로교회에서 ‘평균율 클라비어곡집 제2권’으로 바흐 작업을 시작하게 된 2021년 말, 나는 교회의 역사만큼이나 오래된 업라이트 피아노와 만나게 되었다. (최근에는 피아노가 바뀌었다.) 그 피아노만의 챙챙거리는 음색과 소리 크기를 조절하기 어려운 점은 피아노라는 악기가 발명되기 이전 바로크 시대의 건반악기 중 하나였던 쳄발로를 떠올리게 했다. 다행히도 교회당은 벽돌로 이루어진 공간의 반향으로 인해 충분한 울림을 가지고 있었다. 나는 집에 있는 피아노에서 연습하는 동안 익숙해졌던 주법과 템포 등 많은 표현 방식을 교회에 도착한 당일에 완전히 다르게 바꿨어야 했다. 그렇게 12개월 동안 그곳에 적응하며 실험했 던 방식은 내 바흐 연주의 정체성이 되었고, 이제 그것은 모던 그랜드 피아노를 연주할 때에 도 남아있게 되었다.

현대의 피아노 주법은 ‘피아노포르테(Pianoforte)’라는 원래의 이름에 걸맞게 표현의 많은 부분을 소리 크기의 변화에 의존한다. 그 대신, 음 사이의 ‘시간’을 섬세하게 늘려 다음에 나오는 음에 더 큰 중력을 부여하거나, 음의 ‘길이’를 악보에 있는 것보다 미묘하게 더 길거나 더 짧게 조정해 율동감을 만들어내는 방식은 덜 중요하게 여겨진다. 바로크 후기에서 낭만주의 초기에 사용됐던 악기인 ‘포르테피아노(Fortepiano)’ 연주를 들어보면, 이 두 가지 방식이 자연스럽게 섞여 있음을 알 수 있다. 하양 무학로교회에서 한 바흐 작업은 내게도 그런 하이브 리드 방식을 시도하게 만들었다.

내게 영감을 준 악기는 쳄발로와 포르테피아노 같은 건반악기만이 아니다. 교회음악가로서 훌륭한 오르간 연주자이기도 했던 바흐의 곡 답게, 평균율 클라비어곡집에는 오르간을 연주하는 느낌이 들게 하는 곡들도 있다. 그의 칸타타나 수난곡 같은 종교적 합창곡에서 들을 수 있는 신앙의 증언이, 가사 없이 음의 질서만으로 이루어진 이 곡집의 곳곳에서도 메아리친다. 교회 나 궁정에서 들릴 법한 곡들이 있는 반면, 들판에서 연주하는 흥겨운 민속악기의 합주를 연상케 하는 곡도 있다. 어떤 곡은 관악 합주를, 또 어떤 곡은 바이올린 협주곡을 닮았다. 그동안 내게 좋은 악기 소리를 들려주어, 피아노만으로도 그것들을 상상할 수 있게 해준 모든 이들에 게 감사드린다.

바흐의 ‘평균율 클라비어곡집 2권’은 1권과 마찬가지로 모든 장·단조의 프렐류드와 푸가로 이루어져 있다. 1권이 당시 새로운 조율법이었던 평균율의 가능성을 입증하면서 교육적 목적을 지녔다면, 2권은 화성 및 구조 면에서 더욱 치밀하고 대담하게 구성된 아름다움을 보여준다. 나는 이 곡들을 분석하면서, 제한된 소재 안에서 펼쳐지는 전개의 힘에 주목하게 되었다. 각 곡의 시작 부분은 이후 전개될 음악의 핵심 아이디어를 품고 있다. 마치 하나의 세포 안에 전 체 생명체의 정보를 담고 있는 DNA처럼, 그 아이디어는 곡 전체를 이끌 논리와 방향성을 내 포하고 있다. 이러한 구조적 응집력은 곡이 전개될수록 점차 확장되며 하나의 유기적인 전체를 이룬다. 나는 바흐가 곡의 시작 부분에 심어놓은 곡의 개성을 작고 큰 단위에서 모두 일관되게 드러내기 위해 노력했다. 또한 나의 주관적인 감정을 표현하기보다는 인류의 보편적인 슬픔과 기쁨, 고난과 희망, 죽음과 초월에 대한 염원을 음의 움직임이라는 객관적 현상을 통해 담아내려고 했다.

인간은 누구나 각자의 제한 속에 살아가기 마련이다. 때로는 주어진 여건에 순응함으로써, 때 로는 그 경계를 넘어서는 상상력을 통해 우리는 더 깊어지고 넓어진다. 그렇게 나에게 주어진 제한을 대할 때, 한 대의 피아노를 연주한다는 것은 더 이상 제한이 아니라 나의 몸으로 낼 수 있는 소리를 확장하고 시간과 공간을 초월한 인류의 소망과 접속하는 행위가 된다. 이 음 반이 그런 의미 있는 발걸음이 되기를, 그리고 앞으로 마주할 다양한 상황 속에서 이 음악이 계속 자라나기를 바란다
