여전히 욕심과 고민이 많다는 것은 이토록 아름다운 일이다, 모스크바서핑클럽 [짙은햇살]

모스크바서핑클럽의 첫 앨범인 [저공비행]의 소개글을 쓰고, 그 이후 밴드의 라이브를 자주 봤다. 경연이나 심사의 자리에서도 봤고, 각종 공연에서 이들이 뿜어내는 에너지의 변화를 실시간으로 만날 수 있었다. 어떻게 보면 한 밴드의 역사를 동시성을 가지고 지켜본 셈이다. 밴드는 꾸준히 성장했고, 표현하고자 하는 것들은 더욱 많아졌으며 흥미롭게도 그걸 모두 구현할 수 있겠다는 가능성도 커졌다. 옆에서 보고 있으면 재미있었다. 보통은 방향을 정리하고, 선택과 집중을 하거나 특정한 방향을 중심으로 밀도 있게 진행되고는 하는데 모스크바서핑클럽은 늘 고민이 많아 보였다. 다만 멤버들도 어렵겠다 느꼈다면 쉽게 놓았으리라. 그렇지 않기 때문에 이들에게 계속 애정을 품고 있었고, 나 또한 응원을 놓지 않았던 것 같다. 첫 앨범의 소개글을 쓴 것도 나에겐 자부심이었다. 그만큼 나는 이 밴드가 자랑스러웠다. 내가 아무것도 한 게 없지만.

[저공비행]이 2021년 2월에 나왔으니, 이번에 나온 두 번째 앨범 [짙은햇살]은 거의 3년 만에 나오는 작품이다(정확히는 2년 9개월 만이다). 아무래도 정규 앨범이라는 것은 누구에게나 각별한 의미를 지닐 수밖에 없다. 이 앨범은 지난 시간 동안 열심히 걸어왔기 때문에 나온 결과라고 생각한다. 얼마나 치열한 여정을 거쳐 왔는지를 증명하는 동시에, 그만큼 음악적으로도 진일보한 작품이다. 정리가 되어야 할 곳은 정리가 되었고, 더 확장할 수 있는 여유 공간을 더 만들었다. 지난 앨범 소개글을 내가 읽고 있어도 어떻게 저렇게 명료하게 쓸 수 있었을까 싶을 정도로 모스크바서핑클럽은 어느 한 가지 문법이나 장르를 중심에 두지도 않는다. 여전히 이들은 재즈부터 매스 록, 프로그레시브 팝을 비롯해 아트 록, 사이키델릭까지 종잡을 수 없는 전개를 이어 나간다. 이제는 여러 장르를 이야기하는 것도 무의미하게 느껴진다. 그러면서도 1집보다 훨씬 매력적이다. 특히 음악을 좋아하는 이들이라면, 그리고 이들의 욕심을 캐치할 수 있다면 더욱 즐길 수 있을 것이다.

여름을 연상시키는 첫 곡 “어쩌면 우리의 노래가 세상을 구할지 몰라”부터 세련되고 간결한 “유령극장”에 이어 “삼라만상”에 “아파트”까지, 자칫 듣다 보면 ‘이 밴드가 욕심을 덜었나’ 생각도 들 것이다. 여기에 김규리의 보컬이 주는 독특한 힘 덕분에 모스크바서핑클럽의 또 다른 매력을 만나보는 듯하다. 하지만 그런 생각이 드는 순간 등장하는 “지진관측소”와 “무중력댄서”는 기분 좋은, 일종의 안도까지 준다. 때로는 몰아치고, 때로는 정교하면서도 복잡한 구성을 이어가며 밴드가 가진 아이덴티티를 고스란히 들려주는 듯하다. ‘이런 앨범이구나’ 생각이 들 때마다 그 판단을 꺾어버리는 곡들은 매력적으로 다가온다. 흥미로움 가득한 “Surfing in the Void”, “Prozac”을 지나고 나면 담백한 마무리가 등장한다. 그런 의미에서 “막다른 꿈”은 신의 한 수다. 김규리의 보컬은 왜 이제 이 카드를 꺼내 들었을까 싶을 정도로 심각하게(!) 매력적이다(정확히는 보컬을 뒷받침하는 사운드 메이킹까지 모두 포함해서). 이렇게 담백한 마무리지만 이상하게도 앨범 곳곳에 선보였던 화려함과 전혀 상반된다는 생각이 들지 않는다. 그만큼 밴드는 이제 욕심 속에서 좋은 밸런스를 찾아가는 중이다. 긴 러닝타임을 좋아하는 나에게는 더없이 만족스러운 앨범이지만, 적당히 긴 길이의 각 곡은 욕심만 있는 것이 아니라 앞서 말한 밸런스를 갖추는 과정을 들려준다.

지난 [저공비행]의 소개글을 쓸 때와 이번 [짙은햇살]의 소개글을 쓸 때의 밴드가 달라진 것도 있지만, 이들을 바라보고 대하는 나 또한 달라졌다. 이제는 부러 이들의 연주가 지닌 특색이나 곡을 구성하는 측면에서 장점을 길게 설명하지 않아도 (특히 라이브를 통해) 어느 정도는 알려졌다고 생각한다. 구성원들은 어떻게 생각할지 모르겠으나, 앨범에 더 많이 들어간 욕심과 고민은 매우 아름답게 느껴졌다. 과거의 사람들은 선택과 집중을 미덕으로 삼은 것에 반해 지금의 세대는 자신이라는 중심을 잡고 다양한 것을 풀어내듯, 모스크바서핑클럽 또한 그런 점에서 빛난다. 그래서 이 글은 이성적인 판단력을 가지고 쓰는 소개글이라기보다는 감사함을 전달하는 일종의 헌사다. 좋은 음악을 들려주는 음악가에게 고마움을 표하는 건 당연한 일이니까. 여러분도 이 고민과 욕심, 그리고 그걸 풀어내는 과정을 함께 즐겼으면 좋겠다. 그러다 보면 어느새 앨범 전체를 몇 번씩 듣고 있는 자신을 만날 것으로 생각해 본다.
