재즈 디바 4명이 원팀이 된 ‘카리나 네뷸라’가 첫 정규 앨범을 발표했다. 카리나 네뷸라는 ‘스캣의 여왕’ 말로를 중심으로 박라온, 강윤미, 김민희 등 한국 재즈를 대표하는 보컬 4명이 의기투합해 결성한 팀이다. 그동안 대중음악계에 많은 보컬 그룹이 있었으나, 재즈 디바 4명이 팀을 만든 건 이번이 처음이다.

아무도 예상하지 못했던 카리나 네뷸라의 등장은 음악계의 ‘사건’이다. 지난해 팀 결성 소식이 알려지며 음악 관계자들의 비상한 관심을 불러모았으며, 1년간의 작업 끝에 첫 앨범을 완성했다. 앨범은 창작곡과 함께 재즈 스탠더드, 팝, 민요, 가요 등 다양한 장르의 곡들을 새롭게 해석한 음악적 성찬으로 가득하다.

앨범엔 12곡이 수록됐으며, 노래와 스캣(의미 없는 음절로 즉흥적으로 노래하는 것)을 자유롭게 넘나들며 재즈 보컬 앙상블의 진수를 보여준다. 이명건(피아노) 황이현(기타) 정영준(베이스) 이도헌(드럼) 김정균(퍼커션) 등 앨범에 참여한 연주자들도 최고의 재즈 뮤지션들이다. 카리나 네뷸라의 음악을 완성시킨 이들의 열정적인 연주도 주목해야 한다.

앨범은 특히 재즈 보컬의 꽃이라 할 수 있는 스캣 곡들을 전면에 포진시켜, 그동안 한국에서 볼 수 없었던 독창적 콘텐츠를 완성했다. 앨범의 문을 여는 타이틀곡 ‘Good Match’는 카리나 네뷸라의 음악적 위용을 유감없이 보여준다. 빠른 스윙 리듬 위로 스캣 앙상블이 속사포처럼 터져 나오며 미증유의 쾌감을 선사한다. 멤버들의 스캣과 연주자의 격정적 대화가 이어지며 3분40초를 쉴 새 없이 달려간다. 비밥 라인의 스캣으로만 된 곡은 한국 대중음악사에서 그 전례가 거의 없다.

또 다른 스캣 곡 ‘Carina’s Tune’은 라틴 리듬의 서정적 선율이 매력적이며, 같이 목소리를 합치고 이어야만 하나의 노래가 완성되는 구조의 곡이다. 카리나 네뷸라가 ‘내’가 아닌 ‘우리’로 존재해야 하는 이유를 음악적으로 담아냈다.

앨범의 더블 타이틀곡인 ‘Susie Q’는 C.C.R의 유명한 록 넘버를 흥겨운 재즈 보컬 앙상블 곡으로 바꿔 아주 흥미로운 트랙이 됐다. 특히 신비로운 느낌의 아카펠라 인트로가 끝나자마자, 어깨를 들썩이게 하는 리듬 속으로 노래가 달려가는 반전이 드라마틱하다.

1930년대 신민요였던 ‘노들강변’과 1970년대 가요 ‘님과 함께’는 긴 시간적 거리를 뛰어넘어 동시대의 음악으로 다시 태어났다. ‘노들강변’은 세월의 무상함을 세마치 장단에 담은 ‘유물’ 같은 곡이었으나, 현대적 화성에 16비트 이븐(even) 리듬과 라틴 리듬을 섞어 풍류와 여유가 넘치는 감각적 곡으로 바뀌었다. 또 남진의 빅히트곡 ‘님과 함께’는 경쾌한 댄스곡에서 침잠하는 서정적 곡으로 분위기가 180도 바뀌었다. “저 푸른 초원 위의 그림 같은 집”이, 발산하는 즐거움의 공간에서 아련하고 먼 동경의 공간으로 이동했다.

‘Save Your Love for Me’는 사랑의 애절함이 더없이 아름답게 느껴지는 블루지한 발라드다. 가스펠과 블루스에서 흔히 들을 수 있는 오르간의 왼손 보이싱을 보컬 4명의 하모니로 표현해, 노래의 서정성을 한층 깊게 했다.

노래의 언어적 장벽을 낮추기 위해 한국어로 개사한 곡들도 눈길을 끈다. ‘도라리스’는 브라질 ‘보사노바의 거장’ 주앙 질베르토(Joao Gilberto)의 ‘Doralice’를, ‘음악으로 돌아가네’는 미국의 작곡가이자 음악교육가인 커비 쇼(Kirby Shaw)의 ‘I Return to Music’을 개사했다. 두 곡 모두 화려한 음악적 기교 대신 ‘노래하는 본연의 즐거움’에 초점을 맞춰 편곡했다. ‘음악으로 돌아가네’는 막막한 삶의 불안 속에서도 “음악이 곧 구원”이라는 메시지를 담고 있어, 마치 카리나 네뷸라가 스스로를 위로하는 듯한 노래로 들린다.

앨범의 마지막은 소월 시로 유명한 ‘엄마야 누나야’를 아카펠라로 장식했다. 카리나 네뷸라의 애잔하면서도 고즈넉한 목소리가 소월의 깊은 시정(詩情)을 담아내며 긴 여운을 남긴다.

카리나 네뷸라의 좌장 격인 말로는 지금까지 8장의 앨범을 발표하며 20여 년간 한국 최고의 자리를 지켜온 보컬이다. 한국과 일본을 오가며 활동해온 박라온은 3장의 솔로 앨범을 발표하고 현재 재즈 트리오 ‘오늘’의 리더로 인상적 행보를 보여주고 있다. 클래식 피아니스트에서 재즈 보컬로 전향한 특별한 이력의 강윤미 역시 지금까지 2장의 솔로 앨범을 발표하고, 현재 재즈 듀오 ‘유월의 인사’ 멤버로 활동하며 음악적 반경을 넓혀가고 있다. 팀의 막내 김민희는 현재 한국 재즈씬에서 가장 핫한 ‘골든 스윙 밴드’의 보컬로 주목받고 있으며, 솔로 활동도 병행하고 있다.
