40년의 우정

두 음악가의 교류는 1980년대 초반으로 거슬러 올라간다. 그들의 주요 활동 무대였던 탱글우드 음악 페스티벌 당시 요요마는 젊은 솔리스트로 커리어를 막 시작하는 단계에 있었고, 존 윌리엄스는 1980년부터 맡은 보스턴 팝스 오케스트라의 음악감독으로 일하고 있었다. 두 음악가는 스티븐 스필버그 감독의 2005년작 <게이샤의 추억>의 음악 작업은 물론, 지난 2008년 있었던 버락 오바마 대통령의 취임식 때도 같은 무대에 오르는 등, 다양한 작업과 무대를 함께 하며 꾸준히 그 우정을 이어오고 있었다.

이번 앨범은 존 윌리엄스가 직접 작곡한 <첼로 협주곡> 이 포함 되어있다. 1994년 요요마의 독주로 탱글우드 페스티벌에서 처음 세상에 나온 작품이었다. 총 4악장 구성의 이 작품은 각각의 악장마다 부제가 붙어 있으며 얼핏 들었을 때 악장 사이가 휴지 없이 이어지는 단악장 작품처럼 들리기도 한다. 그리고 무엇보다 이 작품의 가장 강렬한 특징은 독주를 맡은 첼리스트에게 연기자와 같은 역할을 부여한다는 점이다. 독주를 맡은 첼리스트는 단순한 음악가가 아닌 작품의 주연배우가 된다. 음악적 표정이 다채로운 솔리스트인 요요마가 그 역할에 적격임은 누구나 쉽게 상상할 수 있을 것이다. 존 윌리엄스는 이 작품을 바로 그, 요요마를 위해 썼다<첼로 협주곡>은 가장 최신 개정본인 2021년 개정판으로 연주되었다. 이 작품을 다시 녹음한 요요마는 자신이 오랫동안 연주해온 윌리엄스의 <첼로 협주곡>에 대해 “큰 변화가 있었다.”고 언급하며 새로운 버전을 소개한다. 실제로 지난 2001년에 발표된 녹음과 비교했을 때 새로 녹음된 윌리엄스의 <첼로 협주곡>은 훨씬 정제된 오케스트레이션을 통해 첼로 그 자체에 집중할 수 있는 순간을 자주 마련한다.

이번 앨범에는 음악가가 아닌 친구도 초대되었다. 바로 존 윌리엄스의 평생의 동료, 스티븐 스필버그이다. 스필버그가 연출을, 윌리엄스가 음악을 담당해었던 영화 <쉰들러 리스트>에서의 작품 세 곡을 요요마가 첼로 독주로 뉴욕 필하모닉 오케스트라와 함께 연주한 편곡본을 감상할 수 있다
