뜻밖의 손님, 그들을 Look Back 한다.
90년대 한국 음악계는 대형 Musician들의 대거 등장으로 스펙트럼이 더욱 세분화되어 그 빛을 발하였다.
그 때 몇몇의 Musician들이 조용히 C.C.M 세계의 문을 두드렸다. 그들은 80년대 <사랑해요>라는 곡으로 우리 곁을 찾아 준 듀엣 ‘고은희.이정란’의 이정란과 언더 락 밴드 출신의 강문수를 주축으로 하여 ‘뜻밖의 손님’이라는 생경한 이름으로 C.C.M계에 신선한 파장을 불러일으켰다. 이 후 [뜻밖의 손님 C.C.M] 과 [뜻밖의 손님 찬송가] 2장의 앨범을 발표한 그들은 그리 길지 않은 활동을 마감하고 각자의 일상으로 떠나갔다.
그리고 이십여년, 이제 가을의 막다른 골목에 들어선 그들이 긴 공백을 깨고 이번에는 대중 음악계의 ‘뜻밖의 손님’으로 다시 돌아왔다. 타협을 불허하고 자신만의 색깔을 고집하던 젊은 날의 ‘뜻밖의 손님’에서 세상의 음, 양지를 지나오며 어느덧 세월을 추억하는 ‘뜻밖의 손님’으로 찾아온 것이다. 차곡차곡 쌓여진 그들의 이야기를 그들만의 사운드로 함께 공유할 수 있는 기회가 지난날을 기억하는 이들에게는 이 늦가을 좋은 선물이 될 것으로 기대된다.

뜻밖의 손님, 지난세월을 Look Back 하다

1.산
인생은 꿈과 함께 시작하여 꿈이 사라지면 인생도 끝난다고 한다. 그래서 우리는 어떤 상황에서도 꿈을 버리지 말아야 한다. 라는 메시지의 첫 곡 ‘산’은 도입부의 어쿠스틱 기타의 아르페지오 위에 절제된 피아노 보이싱의 하모니와 전체를 백킹하는 첼로 멜로디, 후반부의 락 기타 사운드가 보컬의 감성 기복을 절묘하게 표현해주는 가장 ‘뜻밖의 손님’적 사운드의 음악이라 하겠다.

2.자신을 알게 돼
브라이트한 리듬의 ‘자신을 알게 돼’는 기본 재즈적 화성과 이정란의 포크스타일 보컬이 만나는 곡으로 듀엣 ‘고은희, 이정란’ 음악과 일맥상통하면서 다름을 느끼게 한다. 사람은 평생 마음공부를 하며 살아간다. 그것은 오직 자신을 알기 위해서이다. 그러면 과연 우리는 그것을 죽을 때까지 깨우칠 수 있을까? 라는 무거운 주제를 가벼운 터치로 그려보는 음악이다.

3.살만했던 세상
젊은 날의 초상은 아무리 고뇌뿐이고 방황의 연속이라 해도 나이 들어 돌아보면 아름답다. 그것은 원 없이 누군가를 사랑할 수 있는 특권을 부여받았기 때문인 것 같다. 이 곡은 어쿠스틱 포크 락의 교과서적 음악이다. 포크 락은 담백함이 생명이라 생각한다. 화려하지 않은 멜로디, 꾸임 없는 대화체의 노랫말, 단순한 어쿠스틱 사운드와 연극배우 조정근의 독백하듯 부르는 보컬. 이 모든 것이 향하는 그곳에는 담백함이 있다.

4.천사는 떠나갔다
이번 앨범에서 가장 시험적인 음악은 ‘천사는 떠나갔다’ 이다. 거친 락 사운드를 지배하는 성악가 김현정 체칠리아의 보컬은 애절함, 처절함을 떠나 그 어떤 것이 운명적임을 암시해 준다.
‘천사는 떠나갔다’에서는 삶속에 찾아오는 수많은 좌절과 이별을 운명으로 받아들이는 현대인들의 나약함, 자기중심적 미화를 다루려는 시도가 엿보인다.

5.옛생각
마지막으로 들려오는 ‘옛 생각’은 이번 앨범 타이틀이 왜 ‘Look Back’인지를 말해주고 있다. 잔잔한 클래식 기타에서 오버 랩 되는 피아노 세션. 그리고 두 보컬과 그 두 악기의 하모니를 이어주는 첼로의 아름다운 선율. 어쩌면 그것은 30여년을 한 결 같이 인생의 동반자로, 음악적 동료로 함께 해온 그들의 삶을 이어주며 옛 생각들을 만들어 왔던 원동력이 아닐까 한다.
