이보 포고렐리치가 연주하는 베토벤과 라흐마니노프

1980년에 열린 국제 쇼팽 피아노 콩쿠르에서 그가 결선 진출에 실패하자 심사위원으로 참여했던 피아니스트 마르타 아르헤리치가 “이 참가자는 천재”라는 말을 남기고 심사위원직을 사퇴한 사건으로 포고렐리치는 기회를 얻을 수 있었다. 당시 20대 초반이었던 이보 포고렐리치는 도이치 그라모폰과의 전속 계약을 맺었고 90년대 후반까지 꾸준히 앨범을 발매했다.

2019년 4월, 이보 포고렐리치는 소니 클래시컬과 전속계약으로 21년만에 [베토벤 & 라흐마니노프] 앨범으로 돌아왔다. 계약 현장에서 소니의 창업자였던 모리타 아키오씨와 일화를 기억하며 계약을 기뻐하던 이 피아니스트의 첫 앨범은 루트비히 판 베토벤의 <피아노 소나타 22번>과 <24번>. 그리고 세르게이 라흐마니노프의 <피아노 소나타 2번>이 담겨있는 피아노 소나타집이다.

루트비히 판 베토벤의 <피아노 소나타 22번, op. 54>, <24번, op. 78>

<베토벤: 피아노 소나타 22번>과 <베토벤: 피아노 소나타 24번>, 두 작품 다 하이든 스타일의 느린 서주 부분과 소나타 형식에서는 보기 드문 2악장 구성이며 1악장과 2악장의 템포도 비슷하게 설정되었다는 점 또한 두 작품의 공통점이다. 하지만 1804년에 완성된 <피아노 소나타 22번> 은 그간 베토벤이 해오던 피아노 소나타의 스타일과는 많이 다르다. 느린 서주부를 지나면 옥타브 패시지가 나오면서 <피아노 소나타 22번>은 천천히 재료를 모아 작품을 진행시키는, 베토벤 본연의 스타일과는 사뭇 다른 작품이지만 그 패기만큼은 역시 베토벤이다라는 소리가 나올만한 곡이다.

<피아노 소나타 24번>은 베토벤이 무려 4년여만에 작곡한 피아노 소나타이다. 그래서 이 소나타의 길이는 앞서 연주한 <22번>만큼이나 짧다. 올림바장조라는, 그 당시에는 거의 보기 힘든 조성으로 곡을 쓰긴 했지만 전반적으로 <24번>은 <22번>에 비해 온화한 작품이다. <피아노 소나타 24번>은 테레제 폰 브룬스비크라는 사람에게 헌정 되었는데 그는 한때 베토벤의 제자였고, 또 베토벤과 좋은 분위기를 주고 받기도 했던 여인의 이름이다. 그런 테레제라는 개인에 대한 호감 때문인지, 아니면 작품 자체의 만족도가 높기 때문인지는 확실히 알 수 없지만 베토벤은 이 짧은 소나타를 좋아했다는 이야기가 전해진다.

세르게이 라흐마니노프의 <피아노 소나타 2번, op. 36>

1913년에 작곡한 <피아노 소나타 2번>은 라흐마니노프는 복잡하게 들리거나 연주하기 어려운 부분들에는 다소 여유를 주었고, 군더더기처럼 들리는 부분은 과감히 삭제했다. 1931년의 <피아노 소나타 2번>은 1913년의 모습에 비해 몸집이 다소 작아진 대신 이목구비가 뚜렷해진 모습으로 다시 세상에 나왔다. 물론 1913년의 라흐마니노프에게도 타당한 이유가 있었을 것이기에 원작과 개정판 중에 어느 쪽이 훌륭하다고는 딱 잘라 말하기 힘들 것이다. 그러나 이 개정작업을 통해 <피아노 소나타 2번>은 <1번>에는 없었던 보편성을 획득한 것은 사실이다.

4. Delivery Information
