장면의 의상 한 벌, 한 벌마다 예술작품!
'갱스 오브 뉴욕'에서는 카메론 디아즈에게 천사의 날개 같은 푸른 기모노 탑 등 바라보는 것만으로도 한숨이 나올 것 같은 아름다운 의상을 선사했고, '셰익스피어 인 러브'에서는 기네스 펠트로에게 엘리자베스 시대의 우아한 의상들을 안겨줘 그녀를 할리웃의 베스트 드레서로 각인시켰던 의상 감독 샌디 파웰이 '에비에이터'에서 할리웃 황금기 의상들에 도전했다.
당시의 모습을 담은 현존하는 자료사진들은 대부분 흑백사진. 그러므로 영화 속 의상들의 색감과 질감은 모두 의상 디자이너 샌디 파웰에 의해 고안되었다. 파웰은 의상 한 벌, 한 벌마다 마치 예술작품을 탄생시키듯 각각의 컨셉을 세웠는데 캐서린 헵번 역의 케이트 블란쳇을 위해서는 그녀의 이지적이고 깊이 있는 이미지를 보여줄 수 있는 황금색을 베이스로 한 의상들이, 에바 가드너 역의 케이트 베킨세일을 위해서는 빨간 장미꽃을 연상시키는 육감적이고 도발적인 핏빛 적색이 기본 색감으로 선택되었다. 하워드 휴즈 역의 디카프리오는 그의 심리적 변화에 따라 의상의 컨셉과 색감이 달라졌는데 변함없는 원칙은 ‘극과 극’을 보여준다는 것. 어두운 색 옷과 밝은 색 옷을 대비시키며 하워드 휴즈가 가진 극도의 내면 갈등을 상징하고 있다.
