2018년은 지휘자 레너드 번스타인이 탄생한 지 꼭 100년째 되는 해다. 그리고 이를 기념하기 위해 번스타인의 모국인 미국을 포함한 세계 각지에서는 번스타인 탄생 100주년을 기념하는 다양한 공연들이 펼쳐지고 있다.

오늘날 번스타인의 존재감이 유독 크게 느껴지는 이유는 그가 단순히 ‘지휘자’라는 수식어로만 설명할 수 있는 인물이 아니기 때문일 것이다. 우선 번스타인은 지휘자로서의 명성 못지 않게 유명한 작곡가이기도 했다. 작곡가로서 번스타인은 자신이 체득한 다양한 음악적 양식을 혼합해 특정 사조에 구애 받지 않는 독창적인 음악을 만들어냈으며, 이러한 공으로 인해 오늘날 에런 코플런드, 새뮤얼 바버 등과 함께 20세기 중, 후반 미국 작곡계의 중추적인 인물이었다는 평가를 받고 있다. 또한 <온 더 타운>(On the Town), <웨스트 사이드 스토리>(West Side Story) 등의 뮤지컬 작품을 작곡하며 브로드웨이에도 막대한 영향을 끼쳤다. 피아니스트로서의 재능 역시 출중해 자신이 직접 독주자로 나서는 다양한 음반과 영상물을 남겼을 뿐만 아니라 다양한 저서와 강의를 통해 음악학자이자 교육자로서의 면모도 보였다. 그야말로 ‘만능 엔터테이너’의 전형이었던 셈이다.

그렇다면 는 과연 어떤 음반일까? 라는 제목에서도 짐작할 수 있듯이 번스타인이 직접 지휘봉을 잡거나 작곡한 작품들 중 서정적이고 낭만적인 음악 위주로 선곡한 일종의 모음집, 즉 ‘컴필레이션’ 이다. 사실 이처럼 듣기 편한 음악들을 모아 놓은 컴필레이션 음반은 클래식 애호가들 입장에서 가장 무난하고 흔하게 접할 수 있는 기획 중 하나라고 할 수 있으나, 는 다른 비슷한 기획의 음반들에는 없는 뚜렷한 색채를 지니고 있다.
