나잠 수 1집 [Till The Sun Goes Up]

다른 건 몰라도 ‘댄스 음악’을 만들어내는 나잠 수의 감각은 확실히 천부적이다. 밴드 ‘술탄 오브 더 디스코’의 리더로서 국내의 크고 작은 페스티벌 무대를 석권한 것도, 명실상부 세계 최고의 페스티벌인 글래스톤베리에 두 차례 초청을 받은 것도, 그리고 최근에 그 가능성을 인정받아 일본의 메이저 레이블과 계약을 맺게 된 것도 그가 만들어 낸 음악이 춤추기에 그지 없이 좋은 음악이었기에 가능한 일들이었다.

그런데 나잠 수에게 술탄이 하고 있는 훵크/디스코는 그가 그리고 있는 큰 그림 안에서 어디까지나 한 단락일 뿐. 그래서 그는 바쁜 밴드 활동의 와중에도 꾸준하게 다음 단락으로 넘어갈 준비를 하고 있었다. 2013년 첫 솔로곡인 ‘울어요 그대’를 발표할 때만 해도 아직 희미했던 밑그림은 2016년 초 두 개의 싱글 ‘맥스 러브’와 ‘사이버가수 아담’을 통해 명확한 형태를 갖기 시작했다.

그리고 이제 2016년 10월, 그가 구상해 온 ‘댄스 음악의 연대기’의 다음 장이 개막한다. 나잠 수 솔로 1집 [Till The Sun Goes Up]와 함께.

‘술탄’의 음악이 70년대의 전설적인 TV쇼 ‘소울 트레인’에서 주로 들을 수 있던 소울/디스코의 클래식에 뿌리를 두고 있다면, ‘나잠 수’의 음악은 80년대 막 출범한 MTV에서 볼 수 있었던 신디사이저 중심의 댄스 음악이라 할 수 있다. 좀 더 구체적으로는 신디사이저를 비롯한 전자악기의 등장으로 음악이 격변을 맞이하고 있던 그 시절 등장했던, 훵크와 록과 신스팝과 뉴웨이브를 결합한 테리 루이스(Terry Lewis)와 지미 잼(Jimmy Jam), 그리고 프린스(Prince) 등의 미네아폴리스 사운드를 당시 음악인들이 사용했던 아날로그 신디사이저를 통해 재현하는 것이 나잠 수 솔로의 1차적인 목표라 할 수 있다.

물론 이러한 맥락을 몰라도 음악을 즐기는 데는 전혀 지장이 없다. 그리고 즐긴다는 부분만을 생각한다면, 사실 이 음반은 ‘댄스’라는 기능에 충실하다. 아날로그 드럼 시퀀서로 만들어진 록킹한 일렉트로 비트가 일단 척추를 직격한 후에 신디사이저를 비롯한 다양한 전자악기들이 훵키한 연주로 그 느낌을 돋운다. 더블 타이틀곡인 ‘ZomB-Boy (feat. 넉살)’과 발매 전에 다양한 경로로 선공개했던 ‘Pink Lips’, ‘맥스 러브’, 그리고 이번에 처음으로 공개된 ‘왜때문에’ 같은 트랙들이 이러한 기능을 수행한다.

더불어 음반 제목과 동명의 더블 타이틀곡 ‘Till The Sun Goes Up’을 비롯, ‘아무 말’이나 ‘불꽃’ 같은 곡이 예전의 나잠 수한테서는 찾아보기 힘들었던 ‘팝’의 정서를 물씬 품고 있는 것을 생각해보면, 이번에 그의 목적이 댄스를 넘어서 좀 더 넓은 영역으로 향하고 있음을 의미한다. 이처럼 그의 주특기인 춤추기 좋은 느낌을 극대화하며 동시에 기존에 없었던 새로운 시도를 감행하고 있다는 점에서 이번 나잠 수의 음반은 그의 야심과 역량을 100%로 발휘한 작품이라 볼 수 있다.

재미있는 것은 작곡부터 녹음, 믹싱, 마스터링, 심지어 디자인과 뮤직비디오까지 도맡아 진행했던 밴드에서의 작업과 달리 이번 솔로 작업에는 다양한 창작자들이 함께 했다는 점이다. 일부 곡의 작곡/편곡 및 녹음에 솔로 활동을 함께 하는 밴드 ‘빅웨이브즈’의 멤버 백창열이 참여한 것을 비롯, 더블 타이틀 ‘ZomB-Boy’에는 힙합계의 신성 넉살이 피처링했고, 신세하와 로보토미 의 리믹스 트랙이 보너스로 들어가기도 했다. 음악 작업 외에도 커버 사진은 박수환, 디자인은 김기조가 맡았고, ‘비보이들이 좀비가 되다’는 컨셉트로 마이클 잭슨의 ‘Thriller’와 ‘Beat It’이 만난 듯한 ‘ZomB-Boy’의 뮤직비디오는 레드벨벳, 태민, 오혁&프라이머리의 비디오에서 뛰어난 감각을 드러낸 바 있는 영상그룹 GDW가 연출했다.

1집 발매와 함께 시작될 솔로로서 나잠수의 활동은 발매 직후인 10월 30일(일) 발매 기념 할로윈 파티 ‘ZomB-Boy Domination’에 이어 11월 27일(일)의 단독 공연까지 숨가쁘게 진행될 예정이다. 그의 밴드 ‘빅웨이브즈’의 동료 백창열(기타)과 김지인(베이스)와 함께 할 그의 앞으로의 활동은 앞으로 꾸준하게 진행될 예정이다.

붕가붕가레코드 대중음악 시리즈의 28번째 음반. 나잠 수의 레이블 ‘프로덕션 나잠’과 공동 제작했다.

1. Order cancellation
