DETAIL TRACK REVIEW

강렬하게 휘몰아치더니 이내 템포를 절묘하게 조절하면서 호흡을 고른다. 몽환적이면서도 감각적인 김윤아의 목소리가 들리고, 서서히 긴장감을 끌어올리면서 절정에서 폭발한다. 이렇게 1번 ‘狂犬時代’를 시작으로 2번 ‘아는 아이’를 거쳐 3번 ‘Sleeping Beauty’까지만 들어봐도, 자우림이 이 앨범의 곡 배치에 얼마나 세심하게 신경 썼는지를 파악할 수 있을 것이다. 자우림의 통산 10집 <자우림>은 밴드 역사상 가장 인상적인 스타트로 초반부터 듣는 이를 압도한다.

10이라는 상징적인 숫자, 다른 수식 없이 오직 ‘자우림’만을 내건 타이틀. 어쩌면 이는 새로운 출발을 암시하는 것일지도 모른다. 그리고 또 하나, 자우림이 지난 세월 동안 들려줬던 음악을 집대성하고 싶다는 욕망의 반영일 수도 있다.

과연 그렇다. 앨범에는 희망에 대한 노래가 있는가 하면, 회한의 정서가 짙게 배어있는 곡도 있다. 병들어 있는 사회에 대한 날카로운 비판을 잊지 않는가 하면, 지극히 사적인 감수성에 기대어 있는 사랑 혹은 이별 노래도 있다. 절망에 빠져 있는 와중에 분노를 토해내고, 그 분노를 토해내면서도 아름다웠던 추억을 회상하며 미래를 갈구한다. 이 모든 면들이 합쳐져야 비로소 자우림이라는 요체가 형성된다는 점은 굳이 강조하지 않아도 될 것이다. 그들은 무엇보다 자신들을 포함한 이 세계가 단일하게 해석되지 않는다는 걸 아주 잘 알고 있는 밴드다. 내가 그들의 곡을 넘어 앨범을 애정 하는 가장 큰 바탕이다.

앨범 전체의 분위기는 대략 다음과 같은 식으로 전개된다. 서로가 서로를 언어로 물어뜯는 혐오의 풍경을 혼란스러운 비트와 약간은 장난기 섞인 전자음으로 표현한 ‘狂犬時代’는 정말이지 끝내주는 오프닝이다. 소통에 어려움을 겪고 있는 상황과 가식적인 누군가를 묘사한 듯한 ‘아는 아이’는 공연장에서 특히 호응이 좋을 게 분명한 곡이다. 특히 김윤아의 보컬을 입체적으로 감싸는 코러스와 핵심만을 정확히 짚으며 구심점을 향해 집중하는 이선규의 기타가 돋보인다. ‘밴드형 기타리스트’로서 나는 그보다 뛰어난 연주자를 거의 본 적이 없다.

‘Sleeping Beauty’는 음반에서 가장 내밀한 정서를 지니고 있는 곡이다. 그에 걸맞게 전체적인 뉘앙스는 묘하게 흐릿하지만, 자우림은 이걸 아주 자연스럽게 드라마틱한 구조로 이어나간다. ‘있지’와 ‘영원히 영원히’는 어떤가. 이건 내가 자우림의 수많은 면들 중 가장 애정 하는 타입의 노래다.

먼저 ‘있지’의 경우, 후렴구에서의 볼트 높은 설득력으로만 따지자면 이번 앨범에서 무조건 1위다. 뭐랄까. 심층에 확고한 열원을 지니고 있는 것처럼 느껴지는 곡이라고 할까. 그래서 이 곡을 처음 들었을 때 소름이 쫙 돋으며 취향 저격당했다. ‘영원히 영원히’는 피하고 싶어도 피할 수 없는 노스탤지어를 품고 있는 곡이라고 표현할 수 있을 것이다. 9집에서의 ‘스물다섯, 스물하나’가 그랬듯이 말이다. 좀 더 심플한 구성의 곡이지만 ‘Give me one reason’ 역시 비슷한 관점에서 볼 수 있는 이별 노래다.

‘Psycho heaven’으로 음반의 분위기는 전환된다. 통통 튀는 리듬과 김윤아의 예쁘게 날선 보컬 등, 왠지 초창기 자우림을 떠올리게 하는 곡이기도 한데 그보다는 훨씬 정교하게 짜여 있다는 인상을 준다. 20년을 넘긴 시간이 그들에게 준 선물이다. 반면, ‘Other one’s eye’에서 자우림은 가장 헤비하면서도 히스테릭한 깊이를 일궈낸다. 러닝 타임은 3분 정도로 짧지만 임팩트와 여운이 상당한 곡이다.

“자우림은 이 음반에서 긍정 주의라는 복음을 빌려 ‘넌 할 수 있어’라는 선(善)해석으로 듣는 이들을 마취하지 않는다. 기껏해야 강장제 정도로 소비되고 사라져버릴 미래완료형의 깨달음 따위 이 앨범에는 없다. 그보다는 차가운 현실을 먼저 마주하라고 말한 뒤 ‘이카루스’의 가사처럼 슬며시 용기를 불어넣어 준다. 마취제가 아닌 각성제로서의 음악이다. 좋은 음악들이 대개 이렇다.”

자우림의 9집 를 설명하며 썼던 글이다. 10집 <자우림>을 마무리하는 ‘Over the rainbow’와 ‘XOXO’에 관해서도 이렇게 쓰려 한다. 세계가 곧 비극일지라도, 우리가 기댈 수 있는 존재는 결국 ‘너’라는 희망이라고. 내면의 격랑과 마주하는 현재가 비록 고통스러울지라도, 이 고통과 마주한 뒤에야 우리는 겨우 미래를 꿈꿀 수 있을 거라고. 자우림은 자신들이 창조한 세계 속에서 확신으로 가득 차 직선으로 내달리는 것이 아니라 방황하고 고뇌하기를 주저하지 않는다. 10집이 자우림의 첫 번째 완결인 동시에 새로운 출발일 수 있는 이유가 바로 여기에 있다.
