백건우는 아시아뿐만 아니라, 세계적으로, 이 시대의 가장 중요한 피아니스트 중의 한 사람이다.

1946년 서울에서 태어나 현재 파리에서 거주하고 있는 피아니스트 백건우는 전 세계 무대를 누비며 연주활동을 하고 있으며, 10살의 어린 나이에 최초 독주회를 가졌다. 15살때 미국으로 건너가 줄리어드에서 공부하고, 세계적인 콩쿠르에서 입상하여 세계적인 연주가가 되기 위한 발판을 다지기 시작하였다. 백건우는 1972년, 당시 26살 때 라벨의 피아노 독주곡을 전곡 연주하고, 1974년 무소르그스키 전곡 연주하며 세계무대에 알려지기 시작했다.

백건우는 항상 쉼없이 연주 활동을 펼치고 있다는 점에서 많은 사람들에게 존경을 받고 있고 그의 연주는 무엇보다도 연주가로서의 주관과 그 세계를 뚜렷하게 보여준다. 콘서트 피아니스트 이외의 다른 활동은 전혀 해 본 이력이 없는 전문 연주가로서의 길을 계속해서 걷고 있고, 이는 연주예술가로서의 소명을 지켜나가려고 하는 굳은 노력이다. 지극한 완벽을 추구해 온 피아니스트 백건우는 주로 연주회 활동을 하다가, 90년대 본격적인 레코딩을 시작했으며, 92년 스크리아빈 음반이 프랑스의 디아파죵상을 수상하면서 더욱 주목받는 피아니스트가 되었다.

라흐마니노프 피아노 협주곡은 ‘한국인이 가장 좋아하는 피아노 협주곡’으로도 꼽힌다. 라흐마니노프는 교향곡, 협주곡, 실내악, 오페라 등 다양한 장르에 작품을 남겼지만, 그의 진가가 최고조로 발현한 장르는 역시 협주곡을 포함한 피아노 음악이었다. 그는 198cm에 이르는 키와 13도의 음정까지도 정확하게 연주할 수 있을 만큼 큰 손, 거대한 체구에서 나오는 정열적인 연주와 섬세한 재능으로 당대 최고의 비르투오소 (현란한 연주 기교를 가진) 피아니스트였기 때문이다.

라흐마니노프 피아노 협주곡 1번은 작곡가가 학생 시절이던 1890년 (불과 17세)부터 쓰여져 이듬해에 완성되었는데, 특히 2악장과 3악장은 불과 이틀 반 만에 완성 되었다고 전해진다. 가히 천재적인 작업 속도와 음악적 숙련도가 아닐 수 없다. 피아노 협주곡 2번은 첫 부분의 피아노 터치가 인상적인 곡이다. 이 부분은 크렘린의 종소리라는 별명을 가지고 있는데, 그만큼 장중하고 아름답다. 누가 들어도 단번에 러시아적인 분위기를 느낄 수 있다. 또한 애수에 찬 감미로운 2악장, 빛나는 3악장도 많은 영화, 드라마, CF에 삽입되어, 이 곡은 처음 듣는 사람에게도 아주 친숙하게 느껴진다. 피아노 협주곡 2번이 라흐마니노프를 있게 한 가장 대중적이고 유명한 작품이라면, 3번 협주곡은 피아니스트로서 자신의 한계를 넘어서고자 한 라흐마니노프의 초월적 의지를 반영한 작품이다. 피아노 협주곡 역사상 무서우리만큼 가공할 만한 테크닉과 초인적인 지구력, 상상을 뛰어넘는 예술적 감수성과 시적 통찰력을 요구하는 작품으로 유명하다. 4번째 피아노 협주곡은 이전의 세 피아노 협주곡과 다르게 1차 세계대전 이후에 쓰여졌다. 이 곡이 역설과 불안정으로 가득 차 있다는 것은 그다지 놀라운 일이 아니다. 피가 끓는 듯한 독창적 도입부를 지나 다이나믹한 여정을 보여주는 곡이다.

파가니니 주제에 의한 광시곡은 라흐마니노프가 스위스에 머물던 1934년 여름, 불과 한 달 보름 여 만에 완성되었다. 그리고 같은 해 11월 7일 볼티모어에서 레오폴드 스토콥스키가 지휘한 필라델피아 오케스트라의 연주회에서 그의 연주로 초연되었다.

이 작품은 그의 마지막 '피아노와 오케스트라를 위한 협주 작품' 으로서, 피아노의 화려한 기교와 관현악의 풍부한 색채, 그리고 둘 사이의 정교한 짜임새가 돋보이는 걸작이다. 이 곡은 가히 20세기에 작곡된 모든 피아노 협주 작품 가운데 최고라 칭송 받을 만하며, 그의 다른 어떤 작품보다도 현란한 색채와 악마적 기교, 번뜩이는 재치와 유머로 가득 차 있다. 여기서 라흐마니노프 고유의 ‘비르투오소 피아니즘’은 가장 눈부신 광채를 뿜어내고 있다고 평가 받는다.
