미하엘 잔데를링 (Michael Sanderling)은 1967년 동베를린 태생의 음악명문가 (家) 출신이다. 부친은 전설적인 명장인 쿠르트 잔데를링 (Kurt Sanderling)이며, 이복 맏형 토마스와 동생 슈테판도 역시 지휘자이다. 그의 음악 경력은 첼로로 시작했다. 한스 아이슬러 음대에서도 첼로를 배웠고 요요 마, 린 해럴에게 레슨을 받으며 1987년 마리아 카날스 콩쿠르에 우승했다. 유럽과 미주의 유명 악단에서 협연자로 각광받았고 여러 유명 연주자들과 실내악 활동을 했지만, 첼로주자 경력은 2010년 마감했다. 그 후 미하엘은 2000년 베를린 캄머 오케스트라에서 지휘자로 데뷔했다. 포츠담 캄머 필하모닉에서 수석 지휘자(2006-2010)로 지냈으며 당시 독일–스페인 투어, 쇼스타코비치 관현악집을 녹음했다.

2011년 가을부터 드레스덴 필하모닉 수석 지휘자직을 수행 중이다. 부임 첫 시즌에 프로코피예프 오페라 <전쟁과 평화>를 쾰른 오퍼에 올리면서 전임 감독과 차별화된 예술 방향을 예고했다.

드레스덴 필하모닉은 1870년 작센주의 수도 드레스덴에 근거를 두고 창단됐다. 구시가지 중심에 위치한 ‘문화궁전’이란 뜻의 쿨투어팔라스트에서 정기 공연을 갖고 있다. 2011년부터 미하엘 잔데를링의 영도 아래 활황기를 맞고 있다.

드레스덴 필하모닉은 독일의 여타 도시와 비교해 폭넓은 레퍼토리를 보유하고 있다. 2차대전 이후 바로크-빈 고전-낭만주의-현대음악에 이르는 개별 사조에 능한 명장들이 악단의 전통을 수립했다. 잔데를링 이전, 마주어-헤르비히-케켈-플라송-야노프스키-프뤼벡 데 부르고스으로 이어지는 예술적 리더십은 특히 낭만주의에서 매우 독특한 형태의 동독 사운드를 유지, 강화했다. 19세기부터 당시 유명한 지휘자 겸 작곡가였던 인물들인 브람스, 차이코프스키, 드보르작, 슈트라우스와 직접 교류한 악단 중 하나였으며 문제적 신작의 초연은 지금도 이 단체의 중요한 과업 중 하나다.

드레스덴 필하모닉은 세계 투어를 정기적으로 이어나가는데, 이는 유럽 음악계에서 이들의 명성과 위상을 재정립시키는 데 큰 도움이 되고 있다. 2010년대 한국-일본을 아우르는 아시아 투어뿐 아니라 2004년 3주 간에 걸친 미국투어 당시 “세계 최고 수준의 엘리트 오케스트라”라는 뉴욕 평론가들의 평가를 받았다. 1937년부터 시작된 방대한 양의 음반 작업은 이 악단의 중요한 활동이며 미하엘 잔데를링 임기에 쇼스타코비치-베토벤 교향곡 전집 완성을 추진 중이다.

베토벤 교향곡 3번 <영웅>은, 낭만주의를 예고하는 대담한 화성과 웅대한 규모, 전에는 가볍고 유희적인 악장에만 적용했던 론도 형식을 비통한 장송 행진곡에 적용한 기발함, 피날레를 푸가를 포함한 일련의 변주곡으로 작성한 것 등 베토벤의 혁신적인 시도가 행해진 곡이다. 베토벤은 그것이 어떤 의미를 지니고 있는가를 스스로 잘 알고 있었다. 훗날 누군가가 베토벤에게 가장 마음에 드는 교향곡을 꼽으라고 했을 때 확고한 어조로 “3번, 오직 3번뿐이다.”라고 대답한 것은 아마 그 때문이었을 것이다.

쇼스타코비치가 ‘교향곡 10번’에 착수한 것은 베토벤이 ‘3번’에 착수한 지 정확히 150년이 지난 뒤인 1953년의 일이었다. 1953년 3월에 스탈린 사망 후, 소련에는 잠시나마 사회의 전 영역에서 스탈린의 압제에서 벗어나 비교적 자유로운 분위기로 나아가는 ‘해빙’의 시기가 열렸고, 같은 해 여름부터 가을에 걸쳐 단숨에 작곡된 쇼스타코비치의 ‘10번’ 역시 이런 시대상을 반영하고 있다. 어둡고 침통한 1악장에서 시작해 쇼스타코비치 자신이 ‘스탈린의 음악적 초상’이라고 불렀던 짧지만 격렬하고 폭력적인 2악장과 침착하고 부드러운 왈츠 풍의 3악장을 거쳐 도달하는 피날레는 어둡게 진행되다가 중간에 이르러 돌연 밝고 경쾌한 분위기로 바뀌지만, 나중에는 열광이 다소 지나쳐 광란에 가까운 분위기로 끝난다. 이 곡은 짜임새와 구성, 극적 연출 등 여러 면에서 쇼스타코비치의 모든 교향곡 가운데서도 손꼽을 만한 걸작으로 인정된다.
