이두용 감독의 불후의 걸작 <최후의 증인>을 디지털 4K 복원버전 블루레이로 출시
한국영상자료원은 상반기 세 편의 한국영화 걸작을 블루레이로 출시한다. 그 첫 번째 작품인 <최후의 증인>(1980)은 개봉 당시 158분의 원본이 검열로 인해 상당부분 잘려나간 후 감독의 의사와는 상관없이 졸속 편집되어 상영된 비운의 영화였다. 그 후 오랫동안 잊힌 이 영화는 박찬욱, 오승욱, 류승완 감독 등 후대 감독들의 열렬한 지지를 받으며 한국영상자료원이 오리지널 네거티브 필름에서 제작한 154분 버전으로 주요 국제영화제와 시네마테크에서 상영되면서 다시금 주목 받기 시작했다. 한국영상자료원이 독자적인 4K 디지털 복원 시스템을 갖추면서 2016년 부산국제영화제 이두용 감독 회고전을 위해 새롭게 디지털 복원한 <최후의 증인>은 올해 베를린 국제영화제 포럼 부문에 초청되어 “규칙의 틀을 깬” 미스터리 범죄 스릴러 대작으로 호평을 받았다.
비극적인 역사의 소용돌이에 휘말려 들어간 힘없는 주인공들의 삶과 비정한 세상의 기운을 담은 걸작
김성종의 동명 추리 소설을 원작으로 한 <최후의 증인>은 오병호 형사(하명중)가 시골 양조장 주인의 살해사건을 맡으면서 시작된다. 오병호는 죽은 양조장 주인 양달수(이대근)의 과거와 연루된 인물들을 찾아 다니다 그와 같이 살았던 여인 손지혜(정윤희)를 둘러싸고 벌어졌던 일련의 사건들과 맞다 드리며 진실에 접근해간다. 한국전쟁과 좌우익의 격렬했던 다툼, 인간을 짐승으로 만드는 비극적인 시간 속에서 고통스러운 삶을 그저 견디어야만 했던 인물들, 황바우(최불암)와 손지혜 그리고 이들의 들추고 싶지 않은 삶을 파헤쳐 결국 파멸로 이끌고 간 오병호의 고뇌와 번민은 이두용 감독의 압도적인 힘의 연출로 영상화된다. 이두용의 “카메라 워킹 연출은 박력 있는 화면의 외관과 관객의 집중력을 동시에 이루는 드문 스타일의 매력을 보여”주며 2시간 반이 넘는 짧지 않은 상영 시간 내내 관객들을 매료시킨다. 영화는 추리물의 구조를 띈 로드 무비답게 한국의 곳곳을 누비며 4계절을 담아낸다. 주인공 오병호는 얇은 코트 깃을 세우고 담배를 태우면서 사정없이 몰아치는 비바람과 추위 속에서 한없이 걷는다. 배우 하명중은 그의 강렬한 마스크를 한껏 살려 때로는 폭력적인 때로는 연약한, 점점 무거워지는 진실의 무게 속에서 어쩔 줄 몰라 하는 인간 오병호를 인상적으로 연기한다. 그리고 도대체 이런 일이 왜 자신에게 일어나는 것인지 차마 묻지도 못하는 순진무구한 손지혜와 황바우는 정윤희와 최불암에 의해 스크린에 탁월하게 형상화된다.
이두용 감독, 박찬욱 감독, 오승욱 감독의 풍부한 음성해설로 영화의 이해를 돕다
이번 블루레이의 음성해설은 <최후의 증인>에 대한 애정을 고백해왔던 후배 감독 박찬욱, 오승욱과 주요 영화잡지에 이 영화의 비범성을 논한 김영진 명지대 교수, 주성철 <씨네21> 편집장이 이두용 감독과 함께 참여하였다. 또한 아무도 이두용 영화를 주목하지 않던 1970년대 후반 그의 <오빠가 있다>를 보고 이두용 감독의 팬이 되어 그를 한국의 사무엘 풀러로 불렀던 전 메이지 대학 문화예술학부 교수 요모타 이누히코의 에세이는 그가 처음으로 기억하게 된 한 한국영화감독의 이야기를 들려준다. <최후의 증인> 블루레이는 6월 13일부터 주요 온•오프라인 판매처에서 구입할 수 있으며, 6월 11일(일) 오후 2시 시네마테크KOFA 1관에서 특별 상영과 더불어 이두용 감독, 김영진 교수의 대담이 준비되어 있다.

2. Exchange/Refund
