<레미제라블 UE>는 뮤지컬 ‘캣츠’, ‘오페라의 유령’, ‘미스 사이공’과 함께 금세기 뮤지컬의 “Big 4”라 불리는 걸작이다. 프랑스의 대문호 빅토르 위고의 명작을 원작으로 하는 이 작품이야 말로 음악은 물론 내용면에서도 최고의 뮤지컬이라 할 수 있으며 뮤지컬 시장의 새로운 장을 열었다. 1800년대 초반의 프랑스를 배경으로 젊은이들의 혁명정신, 노동자들의 거친 저항 정신, 그리고 가난한 사람들에 대한 인간애를 다룬 매우 문학적이고 웅장한 오페라 형 뮤지컬이다.
알랭 부빌이 가사를 쓰고 <미스 사이공>의 작곡가 클로드-미셸 쉘버그가 곡을 붙인 이 작품은 특유의 역동성과 오락성을 강조한 형태의 휴먼 드라마이다.
대사 위주와 동작 중심의 형식에서 탈피해 48곡의 노래를 대사가 아닌 라이브 노래로 전개해 뮤지컬이라는 장르적 특성을 최대한 살리고 있다. 성량이 풍부한 배우들이 정확한 발음으로 들려주는 가사들은 심금을 울리며 주인공들의 각기 다른 심경을 같은 멜로디로 엮은 중창, 대창 형식의 구성은 감동을 더하게 한다. 1985년에 영어가사로 개작되어 초연된 작품이 오늘날 우리가 알고 있는 <레미제라블>이다. 클로드-미쉘 쉔버그는 현재 세계 뮤지컬 3대 작곡가중의 하나로 알려져 있지만 80년대 중반까지도 영국의 앤드류 로이드 웨버나 미국의 스티븐 존트하임에 가려 무명의 작곡가였다. 그러나 <레미제라블> 이 1980년 파리에서 초연된 후 1985년 영어가사로 개작되어 새롭게 영국에서 공연된 것을 계기로 그는 프랑스를 대표하는 세계적인 뮤지컬 작곡가로 떠올랐다.

Sheridan Morley는 International Herald Tribune을 통해 이 작품을 다음과 같이 격찬했다. "이 작품은 10년에 한번 나올까 말까 한 작품으로 오케스트라의 소리는 우리의 눈과 귀를 강타한다. 이는 뮤지컬 무대가 반드시 갖추어야 할 모든 것을 제공하고 있다. 화려한 무대장치나 안무 등의 교묘한 볼거리에 의존하지 않으며 막판에 급조된 음악이나 단순한 설교나 훈계를 하려고 하지 않는다."
