음반정보

수많은 장르의 음악적 요소들이 서로 융합해 새로운 가지를 뻗어내는 세상이 온 지 이미 오래이다.

그럼에도 불구하고 여전히 음악을 다루는 많은 글들이 음악을 특정한 틀 안에 가두고 설명하느라 바쁘다.

이는 글로 온전히 설명할 수 없는 것들을 설명해야 하는 난감함과 관성이 결합해 만들어낸 부적절한 결과물이다.

가장 많은 오해를 빚는 음악적 시도는 단연 국악과 대중음악의 결합이다.

이 같은 시도에는 대개 ‘퓨전국악’ 혹은 ‘국악의 대중화’라는 수식어가 관성처럼 따라붙곤 하는데,

이는 창작자의 의사를 무시하는 편의주의적 발상이다. 이 같은 음악적 시도는 ‘국악의 대중화’라는

대의와 상관없이 대부분 뮤지션들의 호기심에서 출발하기 때문이다. ‘퓨전국악’이라는 수식어는 더욱 위험하다.

글은 음악을 온전히 설명할 순 없지만, 청자가 생각하는 영역의 범위를 가둬버릴 수 있기 때문이다.

‘퓨전국악’이라는 수식어가 뮤지션의 이름 앞에 따라붙는 순간, 그 뮤지션은 출신 성분과 상관없이 국악인의 일부로 취급받는 불상사를 맞게 되니 말이다.

필자의 다소 긴 사설은 밴드 타니모션을 향해 쏟아졌을 오해를 조금이나마 해소하기 위함이다.

단언컨대 타니모션(Tanemotion)은 흥미로운 음악을 들려주는 ‘밴드’라고 부르는 게 옳다.

타니모션이 그간 들려줬던 음악들은 국악기를 비롯해 다양한 악기들의 고유한 소리들을 밴드로 끌어들여 재창조하는 작업의 일환이었다고

설명하는 것이 보다 밴드의 의도에 가까울 것이다. 타니모션의 첫 정규앨범 ‘휘청’에 담긴 곡들은 좋은 팝이다.

제발 ‘퓨전국악’이라는 수식어를 타니모션의 이름 앞에 붙이지 말자.

이번 앨범은 첫 트랙이자 타이틀곡인 ‘어디로 가나’부터 밴드의 의도를 확실하게 드러내고 있다.

타니모션은 지난 2014년 첫 EP ‘TAN+EMOTION’의 첫 트랙에 강렬한 사이키델릭 사운드로 ‘청배(무당굿에서 신령이나 굿하는 집안의 조상의 혼령을 불러 모시는 일)’를

주제로 다룬 ‘내려온다’를 배치한 바 있다. 충분히 ‘퓨전국악’으로 오해 받을 수 있었던 시작이었다.

그러나 생황이 리드미컬한 8분의 5박에 서정적인 켈틱 멜로디를 들려주는 ‘어디로 가나’는 이 같은 오해를 조용히 그러나 철저하게

부수고자 하는 일종의 선언과도 같은 곡이다. 김소진이 아닌 연리목이 보컬을 맡아 기교를 뺀 목소리를 담은 것도 그러한 밴드의 의지를 잘 드러내 보여주고 있다.

이번 앨범의 프로듀서와 편곡자로 참여한 밴드 아침과 별양의 리더 권선욱은 EP에서 조금은 어수선한 모습을 보였던 타니모션의 재정비를 맡아 ‘제7의 멤버’로 활약했다.

그 뒤를 잇는 ‘달린다’는 제목을 배반하는 느긋한 도입부와 자연스럽게 이어지는 변화무쌍한 변박,

그 위를 자유롭게 유영하는 김소진의 보컬이 매력적으로 다가오는 곡이다.

태평소가 브라스처럼 라틴 풍의 격정적인 연주를 들려주는 ‘흘러흘러’는 피처링으로 참여한 씨 없는 수박 김대중의 여유로운 중저음과 어우러져 독특한 그루브를 들려준다.

흘려들으면 바이올린을 닮은 후반부의 아쟁의 선율도 놓치지 말아야 할 흥미로운 지점이다.

앨범 전반부의 트랙들이 모두 다른 보컬들의 목소리로 채워져 있어 이를 비교해 들어보는 것도 감상의 포인트이다.

EP에 실렸던 곡으로 베이스 파트를 새로 녹음하고 리믹스와 리마스터링을 거친 '파도'와 싱글로 선공개됐던 곡으로

타령 장단 특유의 그루브와 다채로운 구성이 돋보이는 '나가주세요' 등 반가운 곡이 지나가면 조용한 파격이 기다린다.

피아노와 어우러진 아쟁과 생황이 서정적인 삼중주를 들려주는 ‘황월(黃月)’과 달콤한 사운드를 들려주는 팝 ‘MJ’에

자연스럽게 녹아들어간 아쟁과 생황 연주와 을 듣다보면 “너희들 어디까지 재미있는 짓을 하는지 두고 보자”는 기분 좋은 오기가 생기니 말이다.

작자미상의 고시조를 가사로 붙여 만든 ‘사랑이 어떻더니’는 온갖 음악적 요소들이 고요히 들끓는 용광로 같은 곡이다.

오르간 연주와 어우러지는 생황과 아쟁의 소리가 자아내는 사이키델릭 록과 월드뮤직의 정취는 무척 놀랍다.

익숙한 소리와 익숙하지 않은 소리들을 엮어 새로운 길을 모색하는 타니모션의 의지를 잘 드러내는 곡이다.

다소 무거워진 분위기를 정리하는 역할은 팬들에게 반갑고 익숙한 곡들이다. 지난 EP의 수록곡으로 아쟁, 태평소,

베이스 파트를 새로 녹음하고 리믹스와 리마스터링 과정을 거쳐 재탄생한 ‘탄다타’와 싱글로 선공개됐던 곡으로

경쾌한 코러스가 인상적인 ‘하나둘셋’ 두 곡은 앨범의 말미에 놓여 타니모션의 새로운 음악 여정에 끝을 맺는다.

‘휘청’의 사전적인 의미는 ‘가늘고 긴 것이 탄력 있게 휘어지며 느리게 한 번 흔들리는 모양’이다.

새로운 소리를 찾아 휘청거리며 떠나는 타니모션의 여정과 딱 어울리는 모양새라는 생각이 든다.

그리고 이번 앨범에는 그와 정말 잘 어울리는 음악이 담겨있다.

그 여정에 동참하며 함께 휘청거리는 것도 꽤 즐거운 경험일 것이다.
