▶ 줄거리
1. MOUNTAIN OF DREAM ( 에베레스트의 정복)
세계 최고봉의 에베레스트와 위험을 무릅쓰고 그곳을 정정하려는 모험가들의 이야기.
하늘로 5.5 마일 솟아있는 에베레스트는 목숨을 위협하는 바위, 극한의 추위와 허리케인 같은 돌풍으로 모험가들을 위협한다. 다른 봉우리들을 굽어보는, 세계에서 가장 높은 지점이다. 에베레스트 아래 사는 셰르파들에게 지구의 어머니라는 뜻의 초모룽마(Chomolungma)라고 알려진 이봉우리는 인간 극한의 힘과 인내력의 시험장이다. 또한 매우 위험하다.. 봉우리에 오르려는 6명중 1명은 중간에 목숨을 잃는다. 등정하는 모든 이들은 자신의 목숨을 내놓고 도전하는 셈이다. 성공하는 이들도 있지만 많은 이들이 높디 높은 산에서 영영 돌아오지 못한다.
2. MOUNTAIN OF DOOM ( 희박한 공기속에서)
근대 이후의 등정 성공기 (혹은 비극적인 실패기)와 함께 1996년의 비극적인 사건을 심심도있게 담았다. 1996년은 에베레스트의 가장 비극적인 연도이며, 사건은 수많은 언론리포트와 베스트셀러 책에서 다뤄지고 있다. 처음으로 에베레스트를 정복한 1953년 영국 원정대의 이야기를 담은 다큐멘터리로서 아카데미 후보작이었다. 이작품은 시청자를 모험에 이끄는 한편 지구상에서 가장 놀라운 산의 아름다움과 위험을 생생히 보여준다
3. HIGHER AMBITOINS (더 높은 야망 )
정상에 오르는 것은 단순히 산에 오른 것 이상의 의미를 지닌다. 티벳 고원의 동쪽 끝에는 4개의 숭고한 봉우리가 연속으로 솟아있다. 이들은 소녀라는 의미의 Siguniang 이라고 불린다. 가장 높은지점은 20,500 피트 높이의 Yaomei Feng이다. 등반중 떨어지는 돌에 맞아서 목숨을 잃을 뻔하고, 악천후에 결국 포기한다. 일년후 그들은 다시 등정에 시도하는데 이번에는 동기가 다르고, 더 큰 원정대를 구성하였으며, 더 큰 위험을 무릅썼다. 중국 성도의 Arete Alpine Instruction Center을 공동창립한 Jon과 Ma에게 Siguniang 도전은 단순히 정상 정복을 넘어선 의미를 지녔다. 그들은 중국 등산계가 불가능하다고 했던 중국인 최초 정상 정복을 위해 나섰다. 영화제작자이자 등산가인 Tim Boelter 에게 등정기를 찍는 것은 많은 장애와 위험을 수반하는 것이다. 그는 산 중턱, 매우 위험한 곳에서 심한 두통을 겪는다. 의료진은 등산금지를 통보하지만 그는 의료진의 말을 무시하고, 7개월 후 다큐멘터리를 완성하기 위하여 다시 등정길에 오른다.
4. LIVING AND DYING ON EVEREST(에베레스트에서의 생과 사)
에베레스트는 극한의 장소이다. 지구상에서 가장 높은 산일뿐만 아니라 가장 높은 곳에 있는 쓰레기장이자 공동묘지이다. 베이스 캠프는 아마도 세계에서 가장 높은 곳에 있는 마을일 것이다. 그곳에 있는 것만으로도 등정보다 더 큰 경험이 된다. 저널리스트이자 작가이자 영화제작자인 David Bolling은 그저 산을 오르는 것이 아니라 청소하는 것을 목적으로 하는 원정대를 다큐멘터리로 담았다. 이 영화는 에베레스트를 등정하는 것 보다는 에베레스트를 등정하는 사람들에 관한 이야기이고, 산 그 자체 보다는 그곳을 왜 오르게 되었는지에 관한 이야기이다. 매우 개인적이고 인간적인 이야기이기에 에베레스트에 관한 다른 어떤 영화와 차별화된다
