후아나는 3세 때 글을 깨쳤고 15세쯤에는 이미 각계 학자들의 질문에 대답할 정도로 박학했다. 후아나는 뛰어난 미모와 재능과 재치로 왕실의 총애를 받아 총독부인의 시녀로 지내다가, 성 예로니모 수녀원에 입회하여 수녀가 된다. 후아나 수녀는 수녀원에서 많은 시와 희곡을 쓰고 작곡도 하며 당시 스페인의 '열번째 뮤즈'로 사랑을 받았다. 그러나 여자를 병적으로 혐오하며 여성의 지적 추구를 근본적으로 용납하지 않던 새로 부임한 대주교와 부딪치면서 박해를 받게 된다. 그러나 두 주교의 권력 다툼에 교묘하게 이용되어 신학 비평을 쓰게 되는데, 결국 이 글 때문에 그 대주교의 분노를 사서 종교 재판소에 고소되고 지적 활동과 저술 활동을 금지당한다. 후아나 수녀는 4년 후에 전염병으로 죽어 가는 동료 수녀들을 간호하다가 자신도 전염병에 걸려 세상을 떠난다.

일단 영화를 제대로 이해하기 위해서는 Juana Ines de la Cruz 라는 멕시코 문학사상 최고의 시인으로 기억되고 있는 위대한 수녀를 알아 두시는 게 좋다. 이 영화는 Juana 수녀님의 삶을 그린 작품. 1648-51년에 출생한 그녀는 3살에 스스로 글을 터득했으며 5살에는 회계를 할 줄 알게 된 그야말로 신동이었다고 한다. 그러나 여자라는 이유 하나만으로 그녀의 천재성은 무시된다. 당시 남학생만 받던 대학에 남장을 하고라도 들어가고 싶어했지만 실패하고 만다. 다행히 Leonor Carreto 라는 부왕비의 눈에 띈 Juana 는 그녀의 전폭적으로 지원을 받게 되었고, 곧 그녀의 문학적 천재성은 New Spain (스페인이 멕시코를 포함해 당시 점령했던 아메리카 대륙의 지역들) 전역에 알려지게 된다.

결혼을 증오하고 남성중심사회에 굴복하는 것을 증오한 Juana 는 1667년, 스스로 수녀원에 들어간다.조금은 극단적인 선택이 아닌가 하는 생각이 들지만, 실제로 당대 여성이 미혼인 채 자유로이 자신의 의견을 개진하고 학문에 정진할 수 있었던 공간은 수녀원 뿐이라는 것을 그녀는 너무도 잘 알고 있었던 것, 신앙심이 두터운 집안에서 자란 Juana 수녀는 신앙심이 깊기는 했지만 그녀가 수녀원에 몸을 맡긴 것은 여성이 설 자리가 없는 현실 때문이었다는 것을 영화는 명백하게 보여준다. 수녀원에서 역시 부왕과 부왕비의 마음에 들게 된 그녀는 당대 아메리카 대륙 전체에서 가장 큰 도서관을 소유했으며, 그 곳에서 남성에 대한 철학적 풍자를 담아낸 시 , 여성의 교육과 담론의 권리를 주장한 등 유명한 작품을 써낸다. 그러나 로 인해 주교의 미움을 사고 만 Juana 수녀는 말년에는 교회의 강압에 의해 모든 학구적 삶을 포기하고, 동료 수녀님들을 돌보며 종교적 의무에 매진하다 전염병으로 46세의 짧은 생을 마감한다. 학구적 삶을 포기한다는 의미로 작성한 문서에서 그녀는 피로 Yo, la peor de todas (나는 모든 여자 중에 가장 형편없는 여자) 라는 문구를 남겼다. 가장 형편없는 여자다. 그녀는 어떤 의미로 이런 말을 남긴 걸까?

현재 Juana Ines de la Cruz 는 멕시코, 스페인 등 스페인어 권 지역에서 손꼽히는 뛰어난 시인으로 인정받고 있다. 그녀의 얼굴을 멕시코 지폐 $200 에서 찾아볼 수 있으며 스페인 마드리드에는 그녀의 동상이 세워져 있을 정도. 혹자는 그녀를 그리스 시대의 뛰어난 시인 Sappho 의 별명 Tenth Muse 로 부르기도 한다. Sappho 는 대표적인 레즈비언 아이콘으로 유명한 인물이고, Juana 수녀도 레즈비언이었다.자주 간과되는 사실은 그녀가 바로 "레즈비언" 이었다는 사실! 그녀를 세상에 알려준 부왕비 Leonor Carreto 와 그녀를 대책없이 사랑에 빠뜨렸으며 훗날 등 Juana 수녀님의 첫 두 책을 출간해 준 부왕비 Maria Luisa 가 그녀가 쓴 격정적인 사랑 시의 주인공들이라고 알려져 있다. 에는 특히 Maria Luisa 를 향한 Juana 의 사랑이 잘 표현되어 있지만, 그 작품이 참고로 한 노벨문학상 수상 작가 Octavio Paz 의 만 하더라도 이런 부분은 철저히 무시되었다고 전해진다.
