세상의 끝, 그러니까 죽음의 세계에는 조용함만이 남아 있었다.
누군가는 그 조용함을 평온이라 부르겠지만,
실제로는 아무 소리도 들리지 않는, 무감각에 가까운 침묵이었다.
우리는 그곳에서 일했다.
저마다 낫을 들고.
저마다 무표정한 얼굴로.
‘사신’이라는 이름은 거창했다.
죽음을 다룬다고 해서,
모두가 멋있고 위엄 있는 존재가 되는 건 아니니까.
정확히 말하자면 우리는 실적에 목매는 사무직 같은 존재였다.
명단이 내려오고, 낫을 들고,
생명을 마감하고 돌아오면 그만이었다.
하지만 나는 조금 다르게 움직이고 있었다.
낫은 녹슬었고, 손은 늘 망설였다.
동료들은 내게 ‘사신 같지 않은 사신’이라고 했다.
어쩌면 그 말이 정확했다.
나는 그다지 자랑스럽지도, 실속 있지도 않은 사신이었다.
며칠 전,
한 아이의 어머니가 내 명단에 이름을 올렸다.
아이의 아버지는 이미 몇 년 전에 죽었고,
남은 둘은 작고 조용한 집에서 살아가고 있었다.
나는 그 집 문턱까지 갔다.

자신을 해치면서도 누군가에게 마음을 건네는 일은,
무엇보다 위험하고, 무엇보다 인간적인 일이니까.
그녀는 명단에 있었다.
이번엔… 해야 했다.
망설이지 말고, 그냥 일을 끝내야 했다.
비 오는 저녁이었다.
회색 구름이 낮게 깔려 있고,
도로는 젖어 있었다.
나는 그녀를 따라 걷고 있었고,
머릿속에는 해야 할 일만 되뇌고 있었다.
그녀가 고개를 돌렸다.
그 시선을 따라가 보니,
차도 위를 건너는 고양이 한 마리가 있었다.
고양이의 머리 위엔 징표가 떠 있었다.
그건 사신인 나만 볼 수 있는 표시였다.
그녀는 고양이를 보고 미소를 지었다.
작은 동물을 볼 때 사람들이 짓는,
그 조용한 미소였다.
그 순간, 나도 웃을 뻔했다.
하지만 그럴 때가 아니었다.
멀리서 트럭 한 대가 질주해오고 있었다.
운전자는 핸드폰을 보고 있었고,
고양이는 그것도 모르고 천천히 길을 건너고 있었다.
“안 돼!”
그녀는 달렸다.
나는 낫을 움켜쥔 채, 움직이지 못했다.
브레이크 소리.
미끄러지는 타이어.
우산이 날아갔다.
그리고 정적.
조심스레 눈을 떴을 때,
트럭은 가드레일을 들이받은 채 연기를 내뿜고 있었고,
그녀는 차도 위에 조용히 누워 있었다.
그녀의 품속에서 고양이가 튀어나왔다.
징표는 사라져 있었다.
그녀는 마지막으로 웃었다.
무언가를 얻은 사람처럼,
무언가를 이해한 사람처럼.
그 순간, 나는 생각했다.
그녀가 명단에 오른이유는 나에게 있어
누군가를 돕는 마음은 결국 누군가의 생명 또한 구할 수 있으리라는
이야기를 하고 싶었던 것이 아닐까 하고 말이다.
내 낫은 녹슬어 있었지만,
그 순간만큼은
조용한 빛을 머금고 있었다.
그리고 그 빛이
이 세계와 저 세계의 경계에서
잠시나마 나를 따뜻하게 안아주고 있었던 것 같다.

1. Order cancellation
- Cancellation cannot be made after 12:00p.m. on the next day of the order date, though the shipment hasn’t begun.

2. Exchange/Refund
- Exchange/refund request can be registered through email within 7 days after delivery.
- The round-trip shipping rate is charged to the customer for exchange/refund due to customer’s private reasons.
- If refund is approved after request, then we will guide you in regard to the refund charge and round-trip delivery fees.
- If the product is different from our description/advertisement on the page, or you are eligible for exchange/refund due to product malfunction or wrong delivery, then the shipping rate for refund/exchange will be paid by our company.

4. Delivery Information
